Looking at Your Client as More Than a Payday and Improve Your Relationship

With more small businesses doing their work over the Internet and in a small office at the home, it can be tempting to only look at your financial needs as you develop your clientele list. Instead, mastering some client relations techniques will help your improve the relationship you have with your customer.

When building a relationship, it takes time and patience to get to know a person. The same thing applies with your client. You decide how much effort you put in to getting to know the person behind the email address or office building. Remember to be patient as you try to build a relationship with your client. You both are learning to trust each other.

Whether you communicate over the phone, through email or in person, learning to listen is an important skill for you to master when dealing with any relationship. However you are communicating with your client, make sure you understand what your client needs and why he or she needs it. Do not be afraid to ask 20 questions through an email conversation to make sure you comprehend what your client wants.

Building a relationship with your client will be easier if you visualize yourself in your client’s shoes. Whether they send you a frantic email about a misunderstanding on a completed project or if they are checking on your progress, putting yourself in their position will help keep you honest and humble. When you look at your client as a person instead of an email address, you are allowing yourself to improve your company’s client relations.
